Sage has long been a known and highly valued plant – so much so that some cultures believed that sage could extend life even to immortality. Its Latin name derives from the words 'salvo' and 'salvare', meaning to heal and to preserve.

Sage is known for its high essential oil and tannin content. Tradition associates it primarily with mouth and throat care (as a gargle), moderating excessive sweating, and as a companion through the stages of a woman's life.

Sage in tradition

Sage is one of the most versatile plants in folk medicine. The following describes its traditional uses, for educational purposes.

Internally – traditionally:

• Moderating excessive sweating – traditionally used to moderate sweating during menopause and sweating related to nervousness (traditionally registered use)
• Mouth and throat care – traditionally used as a gargle to care for and soothe the mouth and throat (traditionally registered use)
• Digestive support – a bitter, aromatic plant traditionally used to strengthen the stomach and support digestion
• Stages of a woman's life – traditionally consumed as a companion for the discomforts of the menstrual period and menopause
• Weaning – the classic traditional use of sage is reducing breast milk production when it is no longer needed – ONLY under medical/lactation consultant supervision

Externally – traditionally:

• Gargle, wash – traditionally used as a gargle for mouth and throat care, and as a compress or bath for skin complaints

Responsible herbal use: sage is an effective but potent herb that should be used consciously and in moderation. We recommend sage tea primarily according to its traditional uses, as a course, for prevention and as a supplement, not as a substitute for medicine. In case of existing complaints, illness, pregnancy or medication, always consult your doctor before use.

Directions for use:

Preparing the tea

• Pour 250 ml of boiling water over 1 teaspoon (approx. 1–2 g) of dried sage leaves.
• Cover, let it steep for 10–15 minutes, then strain.

Recommended consumption

1–2 cups a day, as a course – mainly as a mouth rinse, for mouth and throat care, or for the traditional support of menopausal sweating or mild menstrual discomfort. For weaning, only on the recommendation of a doctor/lactation consultant. Continuous use should not exceed 2 weeks; afterwards take a break of at least 2 weeks.

Also suitable as a gargle and wash: rinse the mouth several times with the lukewarm tea, or use it to care for the affected skin area.

IMPORTANT CONTRAINDICATIONS: NOT recommended for pregnant women, children under 12, people with epilepsy or hormonal disorders, or those sensitive to sage! During breastfeeding it may only be used for weaning, with professional advice. Sage essential oil contains thujone, which can be toxic in large doses – so continuous use should not exceed 2 weeks, and avoid high-dose consumption (in line with official recommendations). In case of regular medication, long-term medical treatment or a known illness, consult your doctor or pharmacist before use!
