Hawthorn is the oldest known European heart herb; its effects were already described in antiquity. Tradition knows the tea made from its flowering tops for the general support of the cardiovascular system and for relieving palpitations related to stress and nervousness.
This is exactly hawthorn's traditional use as recognized by the EMA: relief of temporary heart complaints of nervous origin (e.g. palpitations related to stress) and mild symptoms of stress, after a doctor has ruled out serious cardiovascular disease.
100% natural hawthorn tea in a 50-gram pack. Free from additives. A well-tolerated, non-toxic plant.
Effects and benefits:
Active compounds
Oligomeric proanthocyanidins, flavonoids (vitexin, rutin, hyperoside), aromatic carboxylic acids (chlorogenic acid, caffeic acid), triterpenic acids (ursolic acid, oleanolic acid), tannins.
Hawthorn in tradition
- Heart complaints of nervous origin – traditionally used to relieve palpitations related to stress and nervousness and mild symptoms of stress – according to EMA traditional use, after a serious cause has been medically ruled out
- Traditional support of the cardiovascular system – hawthorn has traditionally been consumed for the general, everyday support of the cardiovascular system
- Antioxidant – through its oligomeric proanthocyanidins and flavonoids, it contributes to protecting cells and vessel walls against free radicals
- Mildly calming character – traditionally also consumed as a mildly calming tea
Responsible herbal use: we recommend hawthorn tea for the traditional, everyday support of the cardiovascular system and for mild, stress-related heart complaints – for prevention and as a supplement, not as a substitute for medicine. In case of diagnosed heart disease (heart failure, arrhythmia, coronary artery disease), the tea can at most be complementary, and only under medical supervision.
Directions for use:
Preparing the tea
- Pour 250 ml of boiling water over 1 heaped teaspoon (approx. 2 g) of hawthorn flowering tops.
- Cover and let it steep for 10–15 minutes, then strain.
- 2–3 times a day, preferably between meals.
As a course: 3–6 weeks, followed by a break of at least 1 week. Hawthorn is traditionally a slow-acting plant; regular consumption over several weeks is needed for it to take effect.
IMPORTANT – when should you see a doctor? Heart complaints (palpitations, arrhythmia, chest pain, shortness of breath, ankle edema) may be caused by a serious disease requiring treatment. Hawthorn tea is NOT a substitute for the medical examination and treatment of heart disease! Even for mild heart complaints of nervous origin, only drink it after your doctor has ruled out a serious cause. In case of diagnosed heart disease or heart medication, the tea is recommended only under medical supervision.
CONTRAINDICATIONS AND INTERACTIONS: Not recommended during pregnancy and breastfeeding (due to hawthorn's smooth muscle relaxant effect). Hawthorn may interact with cardiovascular medications (antiarrhythmics, blood pressure medication, digoxin, cholesterol-lowering drugs); if you take any of these, be sure to consult your doctor before use. Mild dizziness or drowsiness may rarely occur. Do not consume in case of hypersensitivity to hawthorn.
UKKO Hawthorn Tea is a food product; its use is not a substitute for necessary medical treatment! Not recommended in case of hypersensitivity to hawthorn flowering tops. If you take medication regularly or are undergoing long-term medical treatment, consult your doctor or pharmacist before use.
