Ribwort plantain is a medicinal herb long known and loved in folk medicine. Its traditional, well-documented use is to relieve irritation of the mouth and throat mucosa and the dry, tickly cough that comes with it – a traditional use recognized by the EMA. Its extract is also used by the pharmaceutical industry in throat and cough preparations.
Thanks to its mucilage content, the tea traditionally coats and protects the mucous membranes, so it can relieve irritation of the throat and upper respiratory tract, and it has traditionally been consumed to soothe coughs. The mucilage can also contribute to the traditional protection of the stomach and intestinal mucosa.

Responsible herbal use: ribwort plantain tea is a gentle, well-tolerated herbal tea that we recommend primarily for the traditional support of the throat and airways – for prevention and as a supplement, not as a substitute for medicine. Important: due to its mucilage content, it may reduce the absorption of medicines taken at the same time – so drink it 1–2 hours apart from medication. In case of persistent or more severe complaints (e.g. with fever or pus), see a doctor.
Directions for use:
Preparing the tea
- Pour 250 ml of boiling water over 1 teaspoon (approx. 1–1.5 g) of dried ribwort plantain leaves.
- Cover, let it steep for 10–15 minutes, then strain.
- 2–3 cups a day, during throat and respiratory complaints, dry cough or mild digestive discomfort.
Due to its mucilage content, take it 1–2 hours apart from medication so that it does not affect their absorption.
External use
The tea, cooled to lukewarm, can also be used as a compress or gargle for minor irritation of the skin or oral mucosa.
